My area of expertise in college was a combination of drawing, painting and sculpture.  I spent quite some time exhibiting my sculptures throughout the state, including shows at the Carnegie Museum of Art.  One of my pieces was chosen "Best in Show" by Richard Armstrong, who at the time, was the head of the Carnegie Museum of Art.

I have also worked as a teacher at the Carnegie Museum of Art, which keeps me knowledgeable about new artists and art shows.  Working in the museum keeps me
informed and engrossed in art history as well.  As an art teacher, I believe that it is vital to visit the local museums and galleries in order to retain your passion and appreciation of art. Then you are able to pass that enthusiasm on to your students.  In addition, being informed of upcoming shows allows you to encourage students to go and become inspired as well.

Once I began teaching, I was intrigued by computer graphics and design.  I have spent the past few years focusing on using the computer as my tool and medium in art.  I have taken classes on programming and game design in order to keep myself knowledgeable of what artists and designers are able to do using the  computer.  I intend to take more courses in the next year in order to learn and continue my education.

I have spent my time learning new software pertaining to  web design, animation,3-Dimensional modeling, video editing, layout, and graphic design. I believe that it is important to push myself to learn more in terms of technology, which is my main tool to educate our students.

Prior to teaching at Agora, I had taught ten years at Avonworth School District, where I was the department head of the Related Arts, overseeing Home Economics, Fine Arts,  and Music.  My love of teaching and having a connection to my students is what drives me to work hard to help my students succeed.  I want to be the best teacher that I can be and I want my students to have the same work ethic and love of learning.

I believe my teaching at the Carnegie Museum of Art keeps me connected to the art world, art history as well as new and emerging artists.  Being in the museum
always awakens my love of art and drives me to continue working on my own artwork.  In order to teach a subject matter, I believe it is important to love the subject as well as keep yourself immersed in the subject.

I work in my spare time as a web/graphic designer.  I have created a few websites, one which I maintain for our church.  I work on logos, images, flyers and other various imaging when the need arises.  This helps me keep up to date with new technology.  Working with technology ensures that I am continually learning. There are so many new techniques and advances that take place everyday in the technology world and I need to be informed and educated about what they are.

Lastly, have a son who is 2 and a half years old and so curious about the world,
encourages me to be a  lifelong learner.  My son works with a speech and developmental therapist every week, and it is another reminder of how each child has their own strengths, weaknesses and learning styles.  I want my son to have a superior education, and as a teacher, I owe that to my students.  I can see how a teacher who cares can make a difference in a child's life.

My daughter who is only 10 months old learns in a totally different way from my son.  She is an example of why differentiating lessons is so important for every student.  I intend to do more research over the summer on varied learning methods in order to equip myself for new and exciting learning techniques.
