To continue to differentiate learning in order to engage more students.

Picture
This year, we have given students the opportunity to individualize and differentiate their studio projects.  It has shown success with students who were not previously engaged in the learning process.  One project that has shown positive progress was for students to create a website.  They were asked to create a website that would educate others about a  a visual or musical artist. Specific criteria had to be met in order to demonstrate their art skills.  They also had to create a page about themselves.  It was a fantastic way for students to meet and learn about each other.

Each section of art class showed an increase in passing rates due to completing this project.  Students had to complete a critique guide and discuss their opinions on each other's websites as well as their own.  I believe the best way for us to improve ourselves as teachers is to get feedback from our students.  Most students commented on how great it was to see their peers, as well as having a decision in what they were creating.

I am very proud of the effort and hard work that is demonstrated in their artwork.  I hope you will take the time to explore their artwork on http://agoraartgallery.weebly.com/websites.html

The Student's page of my portfolio contains the consensus of their feedback regarding their project.

To continue our online gallery to showcase our student work. http://agoraartgallery.weebly.com

I have worked this year to create an online gallery of artwork for students to showcase their abilities and talent.  I have had a fantastic amount of work to display.  I think it is important for students to be able to have a place to share their hard work with peers, family and friends.  I have had a few students from last year submit their work to be displayed on our gallery.

In our cyber world, most students are looking for connections.  They want to show each other the work that they complete.  They are proud of their accomplishments.  Art needs to be displayed and this is a great venue for our students to show their skill.

To generate more interest in art club and design some field trips to meet students.

In a cyber world, it can feel as though we are all working on our own.  To create more experiences where we are meeting each other, either through a club or in person, it can make a difference in the life of our students and in our lives as well.  While reading my student's critique comments, the phrase that was repeated was concerning finally "meeting" their peers.  They were excited to see each other.  Even though they are working at home, they still need those connections.

I would like to try to arrange more time for students to gain mutually beneficial experiences, through an art club.  During class, I had a student help with a lesson for their websites.  He acted as a teacher's aide for the day and talked with his peers.  As they got to talk to each other and learn from each other, their excitement for the project grew.  In an art club setting, they can not only gain knowledge about art, but make the connection to bring them back to class each week.

In art we have virtual field trips.  Next year, I would like to arrange some field trips locally that would allow students to have a hands on experience in art.  Our local museums in Pittsburgh would be an enriching experience for students to see artwork and perhaps create art as well based on their event.

To find new ways of reaching out to students and enrich their learning experience.

Learning is hard work.  It is our job as educators to make it a fun and engaging experience. I have been working this year to bring students back to class, not because it is mandatory, but because they enjoy art class.  In addition to playing youtube videos, taking music requests and having fun imagery to discuss before we begin, I have been using the internet to use interactive websites for enrichment.  While studying Picasso, students were asked to create a piece of artwork using a website, http://picassohead.com.  My intent was that students would remember Picasso if they had a fun experience at the end of the lesson.

A survey was conducted in class to see who student's favorite artist has been so far during the school year.  All responses from the students were anonymous.  Out of 70 responses so far, 29 chose Picasso as their favorite.

You can see some of the students Picasso drawings in our art gallery. http://agoraartgallery.weebly.com.

To continue to improve myself as a cyber school teacher.

Having spent ten years in a brick and mortar setting, moving into a cyber school setting has required me to make adjustments in my teaching style.  It is a learning process for students to succeed in an online environment as well as teachers.  I feel as thought it has been a year of progress and discovery for me.  My main goal is to educate, to inspire and to help my students.  I hope to continue learning, growing and improving as a teacher.
